How to Limit some Cortana user prompts on Window 10

Cortana in Windows 10 has more user prompts with some of the latest Windows 10 updates.  To change Cortana’s lock screen settings, click the Start Button and then click the Settings gear icon, then select Personalization:


Under Lock Screen, set “Get fun facts, tips and more from Windows and Cortana on your lock screen” to Off.

Then select Cortana Lock Screen settings.  Set “Let Cortana pipe up from time to time with thoughts, greetings and notifications in the Search box” to Off.


To turn off suggestions on the Windows 10 Start menu, select Settings >> Personalization >> Start.   Set “Occasionally show suggestions in Start” to Off.

Windows 10 Anniversary Update available August 2nd 2016

The Windows 10 Anniversary Update was released by Microsoft today, August 2nd 2016. Windows 10 PCs will be automatically updated worldwide if the given PC is configured to allow automatic Windows updates. The update will show as Windows 10 Update version 1607.

Windows 7 and 8.1 users can get a free upgrade to Windows 10 up to July 29, 2016.  Microsoft will offer Windows 10 Home for $119 after that date.

Disable Windows 10 Runtime Broker for better performance

Windows 10 Runtime Broker can be disabled for better system performance. This may show up as file C:\Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe in Task Manager.

Left-click on the Start button and select Settings. Select System >> Notifications & Actions.


“Show Me tips about Windows” should be set to Off. Restart the computer.

Create a Windows 10 upgrade install DVD

Instead of relying entirely on downloaded files, you can create a Windows 10 upgrade installation DVD. This is done using the file MediaCreationTool.exe which can be downloaded directly from   The upgrade must be installed on a PC with a valid copy of Windows 7 or 8.1; otherwise a product key must be purchased from Microsoft.

In this case, an installation DVD was created for a another PC.


Uncheck the “Use the recommended options for this PC” checkbox and select the Archtecture option needed for the PC to be upgraded.



Select “ISO file”.


Select the appropriate drive letter for the disk burner, and click the “Burn” button.


“The disc image has been successfully burned to disc.” once the DVD-ROM has been successfully created.
